Driver Jobs in Dubai: Licence Conversion Guide
If you want a driver job in Dubai — delivery, taxi, private driver, bus or truck — you’ll need a UAE driving licence. The good news: drivers from many countries can convert their existing licence directly, with no lessons or road test. This guide explains who qualifies, the process, when you must take the full test, and what the different driver jobs require.
Who can convert a licence directly
The UAE’s road authority (the RTA in Dubai) maintains a list of approved countries whose licences can be converted directly. If your country is on that list, you skip driving school and the road test — you just submit documents and convert. The list includes many GCC, European, North American and some Asian countries, and it’s updated periodically, so check the current RTA list for your country.
If your country isn’t on the list, you’ll need to go through UAE driving lessons and tests like a new driver.
The conversion process
For eligible drivers, the process is straightforward:
- Have a valid UAE residence visa and Emirates ID (you generally convert after your residency is sorted).
- Provide your original home licence (with a legal translation if it isn’t in Arabic or English).
- Submit your passport/visa copies and photographs.
- Pass an eye test (done at approved opticians/centres).
- Pay the fees and collect your UAE driving licence.
Many people do this through the RTA or an approved typing/service centre.
When you must take a full test
If your country isn’t on the direct-conversion list, you’ll need to:
- Open a file and take the required driving lessons at a licensed driving school,
- Pass the theory (knowledge) test, and
- Pass the road (practical) test.
This takes longer and costs more, so it’s worth checking your eligibility early.
What driver jobs require
Match your licence to the job:
- Delivery rider / driver, private driver, taxi — a UAE light-vehicle licence. Note manual vs automatic: an automatic-only licence limits you to automatic vehicles.
- Truck / heavy goods — a heavy vehicle licence category (separate and higher).
- Bus — a bus licence category.
Employers will state the exact licence class in the job. Some sponsor or reimburse conversion/upgrade costs — ask.
Tip: Confirm whether the role needs manual transmission. Many delivery and goods vehicles are manual, and an automatic-only licence can disqualify you. If you only hold automatic, factor in a manual upgrade.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert my home licence in Dubai?
Drivers from a list of approved countries can convert their licence directly without taking driving classes or a road test. Drivers from countries not on that list must complete UAE driving lessons and pass the tests. The eligible-country list is set by the RTA and updated from time to time — always check the current list.
What licence do delivery and truck jobs need?
Light-vehicle delivery and car roles need a UAE light-vehicle (automatic or manual) licence. Heavy goods (truck) and bus roles require the relevant heavy licence category, which is a separate, higher class.
