Security Guard License Requirements by State (Overview)

·

Security guard work is one of the easiest protective-service jobs to get into in the US — but the rules are set state by state, so “how do I get licensed” depends entirely on where you live. This guide gives you the overall picture: why states differ, the big split between unarmed and armed licensing, what training and checks are involved, and how to apply.

Why requirements differ by state

There’s no single national security guard licence in the US. Each state decides its own rules, so requirements range from none at all for unarmed work in a few states, to a set number of mandatory training hours, a state exam, and registration in others. Some states regulate guards through a state agency (often the state police, department of public safety, or a licensing board); a few leave it to local rules. The first step is always: find your state’s regulator and read its requirements.

Unarmed vs armed guard licensing

This is the key distinction everywhere:

  • Unarmed guard — the more common entry role. Requirements range from light to moderate: often a training course, a background check, and registration/licence. Some states require little for unarmed work.
  • Armed guard — stricter in every state. Expect additional firearms training, a separate armed licence/endorsement, a more thorough background check, and ongoing requirements. Armed roles also pay more.

Start unarmed to get working; add the armed endorsement later if you want the higher-paid roles.

Training and background checks

Common elements you’ll encounter (where required):

  • Training hours — a state-set number of classroom hours covering duties, law, safety and conduct.
  • Background check — fingerprinting and a criminal-history check are near-universal. A clean record matters.
  • Age and eligibility — typically 18+ for unarmed and 21+ for armed.
  • Renewal — licences are time-limited and need renewal, sometimes with refresher training.

How to apply in your state

  1. Find your state’s licensing authority and read its guard requirements.
  2. Complete any required training from an approved provider.
  3. Submit fingerprints and pass the background check.
  4. Apply with your training certificate and pay the fee.
  5. For armed work, complete the separate firearms training and armed licensing.

Many employers will guide you through licensing or even cover the training as part of hiring — ask.

Tip: Because rules vary so much, don’t rely on what someone in another state tells you. Go straight to your own state’s regulator for the current training hours, fees and process.

Frequently asked questions

Do all US states require a security guard license?

Most states require a licence or registration for unarmed guards, but a few have no state-level licence (regulation may be local instead). Armed guard work has stricter, separate requirements in every state. Always check your specific state's regulator.

How long does it take to get licensed?

After completing any required training and passing a background check, licensing often takes a few weeks. Required training hours and processing times vary widely — some states need little or none for unarmed work, others require a set number of training hours.
